About the Installation

The Decadent installation, performed on September 14 of 2006, explored my fascination
with decay through exaggerated temporality of the worn object presented in a specific
environment. The installation included furniture, books, drawings and handmade
gowns to create a setting for display of the jewelry series. Each of the jewelry pieces is
held together by living flowers; the flowers measure the finite existence of the works
because, as the flowers die, the jewelry falls apart. The jewelry juxtaposes the
extraordinary time invested in crafting the silver structures and the endurance of the
precious metals and stones against a fleeting moment of full beauty of the cultivated
flower. In the gallery space, I created an environment that encouraged the viewer to
engage with the work as a fleeting expression of beauty contained by the moment and
place of their existence. Rather than create a stage set, which grants the viewer separation
and protection of a proscenium, the spatial configuration required the viewer to move
through the installation and relate more intimately to the models in order to experience
the work. This organization pushes the viewer into a situation of moral ambiguity in
which the models, stripped of their identities, become the objects of visual pleasure. The
piece, in its entirety, explores the value of the transient object and creates the possibility
for layered meanings and desires projected onto the jewelry.
